Might Surprise You!
Homeowner’s Insurance doesn’t only protect your assets, it protects your day to day quality of life, by making sure you will continue to have a safe and comfortable place to lay your head. Some of the things it covers are only a little unexpected, such as loss of use, which will pay for storage, transportation, hotels, and any other expenses incurred because you’re unable to live in your home while it’s being repaired. Some other things covered by your homeowner’s insurance are downright shocking—like the volcanic eruption that made your home unlivable in the first place.
Keep in mind that homeowners insurance policies aren’t made on an assembly line in a factory, so don’t gamble on anything being automatically included, or on the coverage limits or deductibles automatically matching up with your preferences. Talk to your insurance agent to be sure that you have the volcano coverage that you need.
Animal Stampedes
It may sound like an animated cartoon scenario, but animal stampedes do happen, and when they do, you’re going to need some serious cash to cover the damages.
Crime Scene Cleanup
Let’s say a murderer breaks into your home while you’re on vacation and uses it for a two-week killing spree. There’s going to be a lot of blood, and when the police are done processing, you’ll be left with the cleanup—and this is going to be some really nasty cleanup. The good news is there are professionals who do this for a living, and your homeowners insurance will foot the bill.
Identity Theft
This one is a little easier to imagine happening—in fact, most of us genuinely fear of having our identities stolen. If it does happen, and your homeowner’s policy covers it, you’re all set to call the best lawyer in the field without worrying about the hourly rates.
Riots
No one expects a riot, but they do happen, and if your home is caught in the middle of one, there’s going to be a big mess.
Slander
Have you ever put your foot in your mouth in such a major way that you briefly feared you might get sued? Well, many homeowners policies will cover a slander lawsuit, even if you badmouthed someone while away from home.
Counterfeit Money
Counterfeit money may seem like another cartoon scenario, but if you’ve ever had a retail worker use a money marker to verify a fifty-dollar bill, then you’ve seen proof that counterfeit money is an actual, real-life problem.
Kidnap and Ransom
With number seven, we’ve moved from cartoons to action movies—but kidnapping does happen, and if it does, you might be asked to come up with a huge amount of money very fast. In 2012, the average ransom demand was two million dollars. Odds are, your policy doesn’t currently cover this. But if you or your family members frequently travel, you might want to talk to your insurance agent about adding it.
Bites
Even the sweetest, cutest pets can sink their teeth into someone they view as a threat, but the parents of an injured five-year-old boy are not going to care that their little darling was trying to pick up your cat by her tail and swing her around his head at the time of the bite.
Explosions
Action movies again! And yet, explosions could theoretically happen to anyone. Thankfully, explosion coverage comes standard on most insurance companies’ homeowner policies.
Meteorites
This one sounds like science fiction, but meteorites are literally out there, and can come plummeting to earth, creating enormous craters, at any time. The Lonar Crater in India was formed by a two-million-ton meteorite 50,000 years ago, and if a similar meteorite hit your home today, you probably won’t be too comforted to know that in a few thousand years the crater may be filled with beautiful blue water and surrounded by a lovely forest and charming wildlife. Of course, how you feel about it will depend a lot on whether you were home at the time of impact…
Homeowner’s insurance can save your financial life, and calm your nerves in some of life’s most stressful situations. It’s comforting to know that whether your jewelry was lost on a trip, or the prize piece in your art collection was stolen from your living room, or lightning struck your roof and burned out the whole top half of your house, your insurance coverage will fund replacements and repairs.
How many of these 10 crazy incidents that could be covered by your Homeowners Insurance… did you know? If you have any questions regarding your current policy, please feel free to reach out to me.
